Years in business: 48 Years

Area of Design Focus: In the Pacific Rim, primarily interior design and special design of destination resorts, banks, offices, universities, galleries and retail businesses.

Credentials: University of Oregon, B.A.; University of Washington, design courses. Most valuable training came from working with the five top F.A.I.A. of the Pacific Rim, including International Award Architects George Wimberly (Hawaii) and Geofrey Bawa (Ceylon).

In the beginning of the design process, Phyllis establishes an attitude or a theme with clients. It is key that all the parts, the architecture, interiors and landscaping are appropriate to the whole.

In her spare time, Phyllis enjoys training, breeding, and showing Arabian horses, an activity she has enjoyed for over 28 years. Phyllis's zeal for horses has led her to design horse ranches, show arenas, barns and homes in Canada, Oregon and California.

One of Phyllis' greatest influences was George "Pete" Wimberly of Hawaii, awarded Pacific Rim Architect for his sensitive portrayal of cultures of the Pacific in his contemporary structures.

She was hired by Rock Resorts, Hilton Hotels, Hyatt Hotels, and Intercontinental Hotels to work with Wimberly's firm to provide interior design. This project gave her the opportunity to work with five other architects of widely different styles and projects, which demanded that the designer provided interiors appropriate to the architecture.

Favorite Design Achievements: The Fijian Hotel, the first destination resort of Fiji. She was sent by the architect to research their cultural themes and availability of material. They built everything except kitchen equipment and mattresses in Fiji with local craftsmen following her furniture, carpet and window blind design. Other noteable achievements include Maunakea Beach Hotels' award-winning Batik dining room and acting as curator as well as designing the 102-room addition for the Rockefeller Pacifica Art Collection.

Recent Tufenkian Installations: Phyllis has designed houses for the Pacific Rim and in each, placed the perfect Tufenkian carpet to reflect the theme and character of the home and its owners.

Brownlee Design is a current client of the Tufenkian Portland Showroom. As Phyllis says about working with Tufenkian, "When I saw the flowing, expressive character of Dunes, I purchased two area rugs for my new home at Neahkahnie Beach. Designed by James Tufenkian, it reflects our lifestyle and the view from our windows. In each home I have designed for clients, I find a Tufenkian carpet that expresses the mood of the home."
